Family Medicine Residency Programs
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences manages family medicine residency programs in Bismarck, Fargo, Minot, and across North Dakota.
Fargo Family Medicine
The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Family Medicine Residency in Fargo, ND is a 36-month program that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Our residency program is based out of Sanford Health in Fargo and accepts six residents per year. The director of the program is Lara Lunde, M.D. The clinical experiences that residents will receive in this program will give our graduates a broad experience in practicing family medicine. Residents will have a majority of their rotations at the new Sanford Medical Center, as well as many opportunities to rotate at several rural locations.
Residents are supported by Sanford Health’s team of skilled providers. The residency is designed to prepare our graduates to provide full-spectrum family medicine to rural and underserved populations. With an emphasis on quality patient care and excellence in education, the Family Medicine Residency in Fargo is on the progressive track to develop care for a family as a unit. Most of the resident rotations will be at the new Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, N.D., with many rotations at the new Sanford Medical Center. These initial residents will have the opportunity to significantly influence many aspects of the program structure and curriculum.
Bismarck Center for Family Medicine
The UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck, N.D., is administered by the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences. The program is fully accredited and has graduated more than 130 physicians since 1979. The program is a three-year program and accepts five first year residents annually through the match system.
Located in the center of North Dakota, the Bismarck and Mandan community serves as the hub for a trade area that stretches 150,000 miles covering North Dakota, eastern Montana and northern South Dakota.
Our program is well accepted and respected by both hospitals in the community, Sanford Medical Center and CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, and enjoys the tremendous support of the local teaching faculty. Over 100 specialists participate in our program.
The Family Medicine Center is within easy walking distance of both medical centers, where meals are provided for the residents.
Bismarck/Hettinger Rural Track Family Medicine
The Hettinger Rural Training Track of the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program accepted its first resident in 2014 and is approved to accept up to two residents per year. The core program is located in Bismarck and has graduated more than 130 physicians. Both the Bismarck core program and the rural training site in Hettinger are administered by the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Both programs are three-year programs and accept residents annually the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
The programs are well-respected by all sponsoring hospitals in the two communities – Sanford Health, St. Alexius Medical Center, and West River Health Regional Medical Center–and enjoy the support of the local teaching faculty.
Minot Center for Family Medicine
The UND Center for Family Medicine in Minot, N.D., began in 1975 as the first residency program in the state, administered by the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences. The program is affiliated with Trinity Medical Center which is a fully Joint Commission accredited regional hospital providing a wide range of services including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, and an ACS certified Level II Trauma Center.
Our residency accepts six residents per year. We are a well respected provider in the community. Minot is a clean, safe, friendly community of 47,800 (2020). We train residents to practice in whatever setting they choose with particular emphasis on rural practice where other specialties may not be readily available.
The residency clinic moved into a new state of the art clinic in April 2005 where the physicians continue to provide the full range of family medicine services to a large and varied clinic population. Maternity care, endoscopy, cardiac treadmill testing, colposcopy, vasectomy, and a full range of office-based procedures are offered. Onsite lab and x-ray contribute to clinic efficiency and resident education.
The residency is fully wired and equipped with the latest in electronic equipment. The faculty consists of six family physicians and a full-time psychologist.
The residency provides an exciting, dynamic atmosphere for medical learners motivated to practice as competent, comprehensive family physicians.
Minot/Williston Rural Track Family Medicine Program
The rural family medicine residency in Minot and Williston is sponsored by the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences, a unique, community-based medical school with a strong commitment to family medicine. Trinity Hospital in Minot, N.D., and CHI St. Alexius Health-Williston Medical Center in Williston, N.D., are the primary clinical partners.
A new program as of July 2014, it is a natural for medical students with strong leadership skills looking for intense training opportunities that can be customized to their particular needs and interests. The faculty members are experienced clinicians with years of teaching experience, eager to develop a program specifically designed to graduate family physicians prepared to work in most rural settings.
The rural track is administered by the staff and faculty of the 6:6:6 core program in family medicine in Minot, N.D., which was the first residency program in the state in 1975 and has graduated a total of 171 family physicians.
